Report by Tyler Paton-Pottage

OUR WEEKLY ROUNDUP – CHECK OUT THE SCORES AND COACHES’ COMMENTS ON THE TEAM’S PERFORMANCES.

SATURDAY 23rd FEBRUARY

York Eagles U11s v City of Leeds

Friendlies

v Leeds Gold: 2-53 (Loss)

v Leeds Black: 18-52 (Loss)

v Leeds White: 16-18 (Loss)

Player of the Day:

Coach Adam Wilson commented on the U11s performances:

“It was great to give the group a chance to play more games, even though we lose all 3, positives can be taken away from them. It was a very close game against a more equal weak U12/U11 Leeds side.”

York Eagles U12s v City of Leeds

U12s Regional/Friendly

v Leeds Gold: 12-34 (Loss)

v Leeds Black: 54-22 (Win)

v Leeds White: 66-16 (Win)

Player of the Day:

Alessio Vento Joyce

Coach Kaiden Farrington commented on the U12s performances:

“A much-improved outing for us under 12 eagles today, coming out 2-1, starting off slowly as usual, but becoming better and better throughout the day, showed some great teamwork grit with all the players getting involved in playing fantastic. Alessio was a star man today should always talk out there and dominate in the post around the mid range show great fight on the defensive and grabbing rebounds. Really big well done to all the team.”

York Eagles I @ Rotherham Hawks

U14 JNBL North Conference 1

Result: 28-80 (Win)

Player of the Game:

James Wormald – 23pts/7rebs/5stls

Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on the U14s performance:

“In our pregame meeting, I asked a group to be more expensive on offence and not be relied on the same two or three players to do the work. Everyone was to score and rebound and we aimed for 20 assists. We did two out of those three things. Good start for my first five as to move the ball and create opportunities which they converted. However, the second unit became nervy or at least two reserved to fly out of the normal way we see training and a lack of communication and defence. Let them score in a few points before the end of the first quarter, second Q was better as rebounded better, and the combo of both Toby’s, Jack, Sam and Will worked rather well in transition has all five combined on fastbreaks giving us a good lead into HT. The third quarter was pretty much perfect as we became more expansive. We made the extra pass before scoring and we started to play our brand of basketball. Plus, everyone rebounded this quarter and nearly everyone scored, and in the fourth we comfortably finished well, being more patient on the ball, not forcing any passes and getting plenty of steals and scoring easy layups. Shout out to Trevor for putting eight points on his return after nearly a month off of with injury. Also, Will and Jack for showing some authority inside on defence with nine blocks between them.”

Notable Performances:

Jack Bishop – 14pts/11rebs/4blks/4stls

Will Poole – 12pts/8rebs/5blks

Samuel Ho – 10pts/6rebs/3asts/3stls

York Eagles @ Padgate Aces

U14 JNBL Girls North Conference 1

Result: 38-99 (Win)

Player of the game:

THE TEAM

Coach Ghada Khattab commented on the U14s Girls Performance:

“The U14 girls had a stressful game on Saturday despite achieving dominance by the end of the 1st quarter and maintaining that till the end. Tough refereeing rattled us in the early stages, with team fouls within the 1st few mins and a tense atmosphere. But we’d experienced that once before, so we knew the drill by now. We kept our composure, we stuck together, and we played our usual excellent game. Team play was absolutely key v Aces, and our players produced some of the best assists I’ve seen all season, leading to 5 players scoring in double figures. In addition, all players played fantastic defence, so that’s why the MVP is the TEAM!”

Notable performances:

Amelie Hetherton – 23pts/3asts/3rebs/2blks

Maya Foulkes – 19pts/5asts/5rebs/2blks

Katherine Hirst – 15pts/5asts

Danika Croft – 13pts/5asts

Grace Roberts – 18pts/2blks

York Eagles II @ Doncaster Eagles

U14 JNBL North Conference 1

Result: 72-55 (Loss)

Player of the Game:

Conor Camplin – 12pts/8rebs

Coach Steve Hardisty commented on the U14s 2 performance:

“Fresh from Dave and Tyler‘s half term basketball camps, the boys put their extra practice in great effect with a season, standout performance against the champions elect despite yielding a significant height advantage against the well drilled and excellent Doncaster Eagles, the boys show no signs of being intimidated or daunted by the challenge of going up against the only undefeated side in the league. The boys were superb throughout as they maintained full concentration from start to finish showing great energy and discipline. Defence combined with some clinical finishing. The boys circulated the ball well and wre excellent from shooting from deep out scoring Doncaster 7-1 in three pointers with quality baskets, notched up by our regular deep shooters Maks, Taylor and Jake also being joined by Conor and Oscar, who hit their first three-pointers of the season, it was an excellent team performance with everyone playing their part better in the 96-44 defeat in the season and the boys maintained their now standard issue fourth quarter climax, winning at 19-13 in a great finish.”

Notable Performances:

Leo Frusher – 12pts/4rebs

Jake Richardson – 11pts

Oscar Longbottom – 10pts/5rebs

York Eagles II @ Leeds LDM

U16 JNBL North Conference 1

Result: 64-39 (Loss)

Player of the game:

Samson Frusher – 8pts (x2 3PM)

Coach Reece Horton commented on the U16s II performance:

“In a physical game where there were very few fouls were called against the home team. We just struggled to score we were out hustled on both boards and didn’t really follow up as the same effort as last week, we need to be more consistent on both defence and offence, in order to have a chance to win more games.”

York Eagles @ Trafford Magic

U18 JNBL Northern Premier

Result: 104-55 (Loss)

Player of the game:

Dimitri Kotidis – 16pts (x3 3PM)

Coach Kostas Kotidis commented on the U18s Performance:

“The U18s team played against Trafford Magic on Saturday in my opinion and based on Saturday performance, Magic is the best team in the league, they had everything: speed, coherence, strength, under the boards, team, spirit, and diabolical accuracy from the arc. against this, Eagles had to content with the team made up of six under 18s and five under 16 boys who stepped up. The group did the best they could, they fought at all times and prevailed in moments. But against a superior opponent that not only was better conditioned and obviously spent much more time in the practice courts, but they also came up with 14 three-pointers with an over 50% accuracy. At the end fatigue overcame our team and in the end was predictable what we can take away from this encounter is the experience which if you correctly, could help us elevate our game awareness, reduce our turnovers, play more collective defence and be more daring on offence and this we emerge on the other side as winners. We now focus on QE is our next game.”

Notable Performances:

George Andrews – 17pts

SUNDAY 24th FEBRUARY

York Eagles v Manchester Giants

U16 JNBL Northern Premier

Result: 49-95 (Loss)

Player of the game:

George Andrews – 11pts/10rebs

Coach Paul Pickering commented on the U16s Performance:

“A very uncharacteristic performance, especially 2nd half which became a mini horror show with bad decisions including passing out of a press, credit to Giants who came to out hustle us and did so with flying colours. 1st half we battled well, but we reliant on fastbreaks or one person to do the heavy lifting in driving through contact. 2nd half we became lethargic and static on offence and defensively, often didn’t react quickly enough to play help and at times rebound. Work to be done…”

York Eagles v City of Leeds

U13s Girls Regional

Result: 56-54 (Win)

Player of the game:

Sylvie Blanchard – 6pts/12rebs

Coach Ghada Khattab commented on the U13s Girls performance:

“A thrilling first win of the season, winning by just 2 points against an impressive Leeds side. With the majority of the players having only been training since autumn, the team was led by two of our more experienced players, Grace & Elizabeth, who impressed with their driving and scoring. This also gave the rest of the teak an opportunity to up thei rgam, with Sylvie in particular with 12 rebounds and great passing, while contributing to the score sheet. Everyone worked hard on defence and learned something new. We can’t wait to see these girls develop their skills!”

Notable Performances:

Grace Roberts – 32pts/16rebs/4asts/5stls/2blks

Elizabeth Hirst – 18pts/5rebs/2blks

Associate Head Coach of York Eagles Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on this week’s results and what’s to come:

“It was a mixed bag of results last weekend, U11s getting more experience in game scenarios and coming short against fellow U11s Leeds, they’ll be looking forward to next season for sure when they play regular games. Another successful weekend for both U14 1 and U14 Girls as the continue their successful seasons. More success with the U12s this week after a hard week of training, getting 2 wins of local rivals Leeds. U14 2 doing themselves proud, as they lost by 17, to eventual league winners Donacster, with all of our team are year young, hopefully this kickstarts their bigger development leading into next season. Disappointing results for both U16s teams, as struggled to play physical and deal with constant pressure, something which the coaches will certainly work on this week. U18s had a spirited fight against Trafford, but their hot shooting form the arc was too much to handle. Finally, history for the club as our newly formed U12/13s girls side picked up their first ever win with a nail-biting win over Leeds. Was fantastic to see all the girls smiling after the game.

Next week is a special one – all of our U14s are in action at home and will ‘showcase’ their skills at York College, in which looks to bring in plenty of support from others as they’re either playing Sunday or got a free week, a great to acknowledge the U14s and raise more funds for their upcoming Los Angeles trip.”
