WEEK 16!
Saturday 25th January
York Eagles @ City of Leeds
U18 JrNBL North Conference 1
Result: 55-62 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
Travis Greening – 14pts/3asts/2stls
Notable Performances:
Ias Morys – 11pts/5rebs/1blk
Korbin Evans – 5pts/7rebs
Eddy Wragg – 9pts (x3 3PM)
Aleks Meszek – 5pts/5rebs/3asts/2blks
Coach Paul Pickering commented on the U18 Men's performance:
"Eagles soar high as the only unbeaten team in the U18s league! Two top-level defensive efforts battled it out in a tight one which could have gone either way. Eventually, Eagles came out on top. Our pack line D nullified the driving game of COLBA and meant that we limited them to mainly outside shots. Our motion offence needs more work before the return fixture, but we did enough at the right times. Every player contributed by playing their role today and did what was asked. We showed great resilience when we went down and didn't let them pull away. Throughout we displayed mental and physical toughness and a level of teamwork that Leeds couldn't match. 10-0!"
York Eagles 2 v Teesside Lions
U14 JrNBL North Conference 1
Result: 39-118 (LOSS)
Player of the Game:
Billy Kemp – 8pts
Notable Performance:
George FitzThomas – 16pts
Coach James Searson commented on the U14 Boys 2 Performance:
“Was a tough game today. In the 1st quarter, we were slow, lacked intensity and looked tired. 2nd quarter was better, but not aggressive enough on either end. The 2nd half was better, and the 3rd was our best, if our shots went in, we could have nicked that quarter from the Lions. We were more aggressive and created more chances. 4th quarter, we started to look a little leggy, which resulted in sloppy passes and no movement and Teesside upped their tempo again and took us apart. The scoreline should have been closer, we had chances but didn’t capitalise on them. Billy was MVP for us, lots of energy and good spirits.”
York Eagles @ Scarborough Seahawks
U12 Boys Yorkshire Regional
Result: 27-55 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
Thomas Atkinson – 6pts/10rebs
Notable Performances:
Judah Wilson – 11pts/10rebs/5asts
Arthur Bewlay – 8pts/6rebs/2blks
Isen Ndulue – 7pts/7rebs
Coach Adam Wilson commented on the U12 Boys' performance:
“It was great to see the York Eagles show up in Scarborough at halftime. After two quarters, it was a 4-point game, and by the final buzzer, we had doubled Scarborough’s score. When we show up and play our game, I believe we can beat anyone in our league. However, we need to be hungry to win and ready to hustle from the go. We also need to improve our finishing. We were shooting well below 50% from the field again, and we grabbed less than 50% of the rebounds from those missed shots. Despite these weaknesses, it was great to see the boys playing ‘happy basketball’ again! A few players had strong performances (Isen/Judah). The player of the game was Thomas, he played his best game so far, contributing 6 points and 10 rebounds, he ran the floor constantly and answered the call to increase the tempo and grab rebounds better than anyone.”
York Eagles @ Leicester Riders
U16 JrNBL Girls North Conference
Result: 62-22 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
Ava Lad – 4pts/4rebs/3stls
Notable Performances:
Amelie Hetherton – 7pts/6rebs/5asts/4blks
Zofia Parsons – 18pts/7rebs/7stls/2asts
Maya Foulkes – 17pts/6stls/4rebs/2asts (x3 3PM)
Danika Croft – 10pts/7stls/4asts/4rebs
Coach Ghada Khattab commented on the U16 Girls Performance:
“The girls produced a decent win this week even if it was not as emphatic as our first counter with the Trailblazers. This was partly due to some players recovering from injury, but we also relaxed too much at times and our scoring percentage wasn’t great. However, there was still enough of the great ball movement and clever passes to players in the right space on offence, whilst our defence was as solid as ever and allowed us to recover from our mistakes. Hats off to Derby’s coach who does such a great job, and to her team and their parents for being so lovely and a pleasure to host.”
York Eagles v City of Leeds
U13 Yorkshire Regional
Result: 33-30 (WIN)
Player (s) of the Game:
Florence Walker – 9pts/3asts/2stls
Tilly Tucker – 2pts/2stls
Notable Performances:
Sylvie Blanchard – 8pts/16rebs/4asts/2blks/2stls
Zuza Bogdanska – 8pts/11rebs/3stls
Coach Ghada Khattab commented on the U13 Girls' Performance:
“A combo of years 5 to 8 played in this regional game and had infectious energy and enthusiasm. They defended better than I’ve seen them do before and played really well together. Despite not having a lot of match experience under their belt, I can see team play emerging and there were some great assists which gave us the advantage. We still have a lot of work to do on that front, including our shooting, but I am really proud of thethe girls for holding on to the lead till the very end, despite dropping one ball in the away basket.”
Sunday 26th January
York Eagles @ East Durham Lions
U14 JrNBL North Conference 1
Result: 52-60 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
Cameron Stewart – 8pts/9rebs/3stls
Notable Performances:
James Clayton – 19pts/6rebs/3stls
Conor C – 9pts/10rebs/5stls
Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on the U14 Boys 1 Performance:
“A common theme for us is that we start slow and lethargic, and we do not settle till later, but this game was the opposite! We started off very well in the 1st half with some great BOBs plays, which shows me that they do pay attention to detail, our ball movement was impressive as we continue to improve on our Drive, Kick and Extra Philosophy. We took good shots; some went in and some did not. So, tightening up our shooting from deep and baseline to be down in this week’s training. 2nd half we often found ourselves playing on eggshells with foul trouble, they considered us, too aggressive although I thought it was fine. Lions made a good fight for us in the 4th, but our constant full-court defensive pressure was too much for East Durham as we stole the ball a few times and caught them in transition which is our strongest strength! A few things to focus on, Closeouts and defending under the basket, but happy that we controlled the game throughout.”
York Eagles 3 @ Sheffield Sharks 2
U16 JrNBL North Conference 2
Result: 45-63 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
Trevor Wood – 23pts/3rebs (x5 3PM)
Notable Performances:
Sam Smales – 10pts/17rebs/2blks
Will Poole – 10pts/9rebs/4blks
Coach Mike Wood commented on the U16 Boys 3 performance:
“The lads put on a great performance on Sunday, it was surely one of our best games of the season. It was incredible to be part of it, as the action on court was nonstop. The ball movement was superb, rebounding was good with 44 and steals were a thrill to watch. The team held their ground and kept up their half-court defensive pressure and played with intensity. Fully deserved that win!”
York Eagles 2 v Doncaster Eagles
U16 JrNBL North Conference 2
Result: 47-86 (LOSS)
Player of the Game:
Josh Ameodo – 10pts
Notable Performances:
Lucas Hazell – 7pts
Ollie Llewellyn – 11pts
James Wormald – 8pts
Coach Dave Smith commented on the U16 Boys 2 performance:
“Certainly, going from a 72pt loss to 39 is a big improvement and Doncaster may be the eventual winners of the league. In the past, we have had a few mins in enough games when we competed. Sunday it was the whole 3rd quarter as we won it 17-15 against Doncaster! Caveat – their weaker players were on court but we did the right things. A highlight for myself as a coach is to see a player previously struggling to have a ‘breakthrough’ period. Josh showed several of our players that with determination and confidence then great things can happen. And he was my MVP in this game.”
York Eagles v Milton Keynes Breakers
U16 JrNBL Northern Premier
Result: 54-62 (LOSS)
Player of the Game:
Ias Morys – 27pts/9rebs/5stls
Notable Performances:
Aleks Meszek – 8pts/8rebs/3asts
Coach Reece Horton commented on the U16 Boys 1 Performance:
“Really pleased with how the boys played today. A great effort from start to finish. We need to have composure at the end to make our foul shots and finish plays. If we bring the same effort for the rest of the season, we’ll finish well. Ias was our MVP, leading the offence and being productive with 27pts.”
