As a club, we have taken steps to improve the safeguarding systems we currently have in place. We wanted to update you on one change that is important for all members of our community to be aware of and that is the role we all take within safeguarding the young people at York Eagles Junior Basketball Club.
What is a Safeguarding Concern?
A safeguarding concern arises when there is a reasonable belief or evidence that a child or vulnerable adult is experiencing or is at risk of harm, abuse, or neglect. Harm can take many forms, including but not limited to:
These concerns might come to light through observation, disclosures from the individual or others, or changes in behaviour or circumstances that suggest they may be at risk.
When Should a Referral Be Completed?
A referral should be made as soon as there is a concern about the safety or well-being of an individual. Immediate action is particularly important if:
Referrals should be made via our new online form York Eagles Junior Basketball Club - Safeguarding Referral Form (also available from the Resources page on the website). Completing this form will notify the relevant safeguarding lead at York Eagles Junior Basketball Club that a concern has been raised. This concern will then be reviewed by the safeguarding team and allow for action to be taken if necessary.
If you are ever unsure whether a situation warrants a referral, it is better to err on the side of caution and complete a referral. Incidents may seem minor, but repeated referrals go on to build bigger pictures or allow patterns in behaviour to be seen and it is therefore important that these initial incidents are reported.
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and timely action can make a significant difference in protecting those at risk. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need further clarification or guidance on this matter.
