Report by Tyler Paton-Pottage
WEEK 11!
Saturday 7th December
York Eagles v Teeside Lions
U14 JrNBL North Conference 1
Result: 48-75 (LOSS)
Player of the Game: Griffin Evans – 8pts
Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on the U14 Boys 1 performance:
“We were not at the races today, although a very nervy first quarter with both teams understanding the importance of the game. Griffin became a handful with 8 unanswered points to go up at the end of the first 10. Then from there we let the nerves mixed with poor judgements on offense with us moving with nil purpose led to poor shot selection, our defence for parts was fine but we were not in their faces as much as we know we can be. Taylor had a lot of steals reading transition passes well. But rebounding and not boxing out was the key factor to the manner that we lost. Need to show more communication skills on both ends of the court too. A big week of training coming up.”
York Eagles U14 2 @ Bradford Dragons
U14 JrNBL North Conference 1
Result: 85-36 (LOSS)
Player of the Game: George FitzThomas – 14pts
Coach James Searson commented on the U14 Boys 2 performance:
“It should have been a closer game overall, as the first half we played well and could have even been up at half. But then we had too many turnovers in the second half but showed glimpses of good defensive work in the 3Q. Offensive movement was poor which led to the number of turnovers.”
York Eagles v Sheffield Hatters II
U16 JrNBL Girls North Conference
Result: 56-36 (WIN)
Player of the Game: Molly Jones – 16pts/4stls/4blks
Notable Performances:
Zofia Parsons – 10pts/10rebs/9stls
Maya Foulkes – 14pts/7rebs/5asts/7stls
Danika Croft – 5pts/12rebs
Coach Ghada Khattab commented on the U16 Girls Performance:
“The girls produced a performance to remember v Hatters, we dominated both sides of the court. On defence, they worked together to protect the key, stop drivers in their tracks and close out shooters. On offence, ball circulation was fantastic for the majority of the time, with players moving efficiently and predicting their teammates' next move, which led to some great assists. Our finishing is improving but still has a way to go, and occasional moments of panic are gradually being replaced by more mature decision-making. Molly produced her performance of the season, Maya shone in her PG role, while Zofia and Danika got the lion’s share of rebounds. Everyone worked incredibly hard and showed high-end team play! Super proud!”
York Eagles 3 @ Barnsley Advance
U16 JrNBL North Conference 2
Result: 65-50 (LOSS)
Player of the Game: Sam Smales – 22pts
Notable performances:
Trevor Wood – 13pts
Coach Mike Wood commented on the U16 Boys 3 Performance:
“We started the game strong and kept pace with everything that Barnsley threw at us. At times victory felt close. Our ball movement was impressive, and we worked together seamlessly on offence, however, one key area we need to improve is rebounding. We only managed 27 rebounds this game which put us at a disadvantage. It is worth noting that they had some tall players, but we need to overcome that in future games.”
York Eagles 2 v Derbyshire Arrows
U16 JrNBL North Conference 2
Result: 25-84 (LOSS)
Player of the Game:
James Wormald – 10pts
Coach Dave Smith commented on the U16 Boys 2 performance:
“We played a top 3 team in the league, we were up against it, with notable experience and speed in the arrows. We struggled to deal with them more so in the 2nd half as they kept finding transition and we need to work on defensive transition. 41-8 in the 2nd half showed that. The positives were that the first quarter was ok, we fought hard with James using his good fundamental footwork to get to the hoop. We still are in lesson of fighting for the ball and show our tougher side! A big game next week as it is a winnable game!”
Sunday 8th December
York Eagles @ City of Leeds Gold
U16 JrNBL Northern Premier
Result: 52-83 (WIN)
Player of the Game: Kaiden Dimmey – 13pts
Notable Performances:
Ben Wells – 17pts/10rebs/8asts/5stls
Coach Reece Horton commented on the U16 Boys 1 performance:
“Great team win. We played together for the whole game, and it was a game where we had more assists. Aleks and Ben kept the scoreboard ticking over throughout the game. Another game that had balanced scoring. Kaiden rebounded well and got those balls early before reaping his rewards in the 2nd half with a sizeable number of points.”
York Eagles v East Durham Lions
U18 JrNBL North Conference 1
Result: 99-38 (WIN)
Player of the Game: Alex Holloway – 11pts/2rebs
Notable performances:
Korbin Evans – 17pts/15rebs/8asts
Emilis Vildziunas – 27pts//7asts/5rebs/5blks
Coach Paul Pickering commented on the U18 Men’s performance:
“A comprehensive win against a team that didn't have the firepower to cause us any issues. We got straight to the task with some high-pressure defence that resulted in a few early turnovers but Durham managed to break the press effectively so we moved to half-court defence, and they couldn't break us down. Some good ball movement resulted in good looks and everyone getting on the score sheet. We struggled with controlling the glass at points and occasionally becoming frantic but overall, a controlled win taking us 9-0 and staying top of the pile in the North.”
