Eagles Weekly Wrap 2025-02-12

Wednesday 12th February 2025

Report by Tyler Paton-Pottage

WEEK 18!

Saturday 8th February

York Eagles @ City of Leeds Gold

U12 Boys Yorkshire Regional

Result: 53-48 (LOSS)

Player of the Game:

Will Hall – 12pts

Notable Performances:

Judah Wilson – 16pts/4asts

Isen Ndulue – 6pts/6rebs/3blks

Arthur Bewlay – 4pts/9rebs/4stls/4blks

Coach Adam Wilson commented on the U12 Boys performance:

“We left Leeds with our heads held high after a really solid effort against a very strong team. If we had the chance to play one more quarter, we would have won. We started and finished strong, but we lost the second quarter by too much to bring it back. We moved the ball well and ran the floor, but if we want to win these close games, we need to increase our shooting percentage and the number of rebounds we get. I am so grateful for the effort the boys put in and for all the support from the bench. MVP goes to Will Hall. He made a massive impact every time he was on the floor and got 12 points making 5/6 from the field and 2/2 free throws.”

York Eagles v Derbyshire Arrows

U13 Boys Yorkshire Regional

Result: 86-83 (WIN)

Player of the Game:

George FitzThomas – 43pts/6rebs/3blks (CLUB SEASON HIGH IN PTS)

Notable Performances:

Jake Richardson – 11pts/3rebs/3stls

Maks Molka – 7pts

Coach James Searson commented on the U13 Boys Performance:

“Crazy game on Saturday. We started so poorly, we were frantic, took us whole first half to settle down. 2nd quarter had some nice defensive stops from highlighted by 2 blocks from Maks which enthused the rest of the team. The aim of the 3rd quarter was to chip away at the scoreline, to give us a chance to catch arrows in the final 10 minutes, which we did. The last quarter we went up a level and managed to take the lead. Once in front we controlled the last few minutes to win the game. Hardwork and perseverance won this game, so many red faces at the end. MVP was George F., he drove this team and losing wasn’t an option in his mind. A special mention goes to Adam K, he listened and executed instructions I gave and his points from the FT line were crucial.”

York Eagles @ Manchester Giants

U16 JrNBL Northern Premier

Result: 95-60 (LOSS)

Player of the Game: Maximos Kotidis

Notable Performances:

Ias Morys – 17pts

Ben Wells – 12pts

Aleks Meszek – 10pts/12rebs/4blks

Samuel Ho – 8pts

Coach Reece Horton commented on the U16 Boys 1 performance:

“A tough game against a strong team. Giants are a big, physical team and we weren’t able to compete with them for the whole game. The boys never gave up and we need to take that resilience into the next game this weekend.”

York Eagles 2 @ Barnsley Advance

U16 JrNBL North Conference 2

Result: 94-46 (LOSS)

Player of the Game:

Micah Wild – 10pts/3asts/5rebs/3stls

Notable performances:

James Wormald – 17pts/5rebs/4stls

Lucas Hazell – 12pts/6rebs/2blks

Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on the U16 Boys 2 Performance:

"Although the score was as big as it is, I don’t think it was a fair representation of how well we did, for 30 minutes we executed well, especially in the first 10 minutes, we moved the ball with purpose, screens were done with ideas to get ourselves free and drove well to the basket frequently, we also trialled a few things on defence (full court pressure, switching zonal defensive) showed me their mental and IQ development this season as a group. A bad 2nd quarter as we often gave the ball away in which Advance punished us inside with their x4 massive 6’5+ players, so rebounding was a difficult task. Micah and James stood out, with Micah scoring his season best with some excellent drives with confidence and James was his usual style of finishing from good footwork to beat his defender. Work to be done on some defensive transition and inbounding the ball from pressure, to be ready for a big game v Hatfield this Saturday.”

York Eagles v Mersey Mavericks

U16 Girls JrNBL North Conference

Result: 56-53 (WIN)

Player (s) of the Game:

Amelie Hetherton – 11pts/5rebs/4asts/3stls

Zofia Parsons – 6pts/8rebs/6asts/5stls

Notable Performances:

Maya Foulkes – 16pts/6rebs/3asts/3stls

Molly Jones – 8pts/12rebs/4asts/4blks

Coach Ghada Khattab commented on the U16 Girls performance:

“The girls delivered top-class defence last Saturday as they sought to win against the Mavericks, having lost to them in the reverse fixture before Christmas. Shooting was initially not on our side, while the Mavericks had a couple of players who could hardly miss. But we tightened our defence even more and our strategic plays started to pay dividends. The game changed hands a few times, but the final win was ours thanks to hard work and sheer determination. Special mention to Zofia and Molly for minimising the damage from the offence, Amelie and Maya for each taking care of the score at different times and for the whole team for working together so well to seal the win.”

Sunday 9th February

York Eagles 3 v Sheffield DreamChasers

U16 JrNBL North Conference 2

Result: 43-35 (WIN)

Player of the Game:

Hayden Fogg – 6pts/3asts/4rebs/2stls

Notable Performances:

Trevor Wood – 16pts/5rebs/5stls

Will Poole – 9pts/21rebs/2blks

Coach Mike Wood commented on the U16 Boys 3 performance:

“Sunday’s game was a tough battle. It was not our finest game, so a win is a win. We struggled with missed shots and turnovers, which put us at a disadvantage. However, we persevered and found way to come out on top. One key area we need to focus on is footwork, making sure we use our pivot foot correctly and maintain control while dribbling. Despite our shooting struggles, I am proud of how we stayed composed and capitalised on the shots that mattered most. A major highlight of the game was reaching our goal of 50 rebounds – an outstanding effort! MVP was Hayden, showed exceptional focus making strong moves inside and taking the ball to the hoop with confidence. An honourable mention to Will who had a Dennis Rodman like game with 21 rebounds!”

York Eagles v COLBA II

U18 JrNBL North Conference 1

Result: 88-51 (WIN)

Player of the Game:

Sam Walker-Taylor – 4pts/5asts/10rebs/3blks/3stls

Notable Performances:

Lukai Ostrowski – 19pts/5rebs/5stls

Ben Wells – 14pts/4rebs/3stls

Ias Morys – 12pts/3rebs/5stls

Travis Greening – 12pts/5rebs/3stls

Coach Paul Pickering commented on the U18 Men’s performance:

"In stark contrast to last week's slow start we came out of the gates with a strong pressure game and some great ball movement. We took and early lead and continued the intensity through the first 3 quarters. We struggled to maintain focus and our rebounding failed us in the 4th as did our ability to finish and for our shots to drop. In essence a reverse of last week so the key is for us to work on putting together both performances to get the optimum result.  Shout-out to everyone as all featured on the scoresheet in a strong team performance giving evenly split court time.  Not something as a club we have always had strength in but I can say that York Eagles are a 3pt threat."
