Report by Tyler Paton-Pottage
WEEK 20!
Saturday 22nd February
York Eagles 3 @ Rotherham Hawks
U16 JrNBL North Conference 2
Result: 55-69 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
Luke Lattimore-Bahrij – 18pts/7rebs/3asts/2blks
Notable Performances:
Freddie Drummond – 16pts/21rebs/2blks
Iker Martinez Chavana – 13pts/4rebs
Trevor Wood – 11pts/7rebs (x3 3PM)
Coach Mike Wood commented on the U16 Boys 3 performance:
“A slight challenge at first with Hawks coming out with a 2-2-1 zone press, forcing us to adjust our tactics. Although our adjustment didn’t replicate into points, we did capitalise on our ability to make outside shots which played to our strengths. The second half followed a similar pattern, but this is where Freddie made a huge impact, posting at low block with success. With Luke controlling the tempo, he recognised Freddie’s height advantage and fed him the ball for layups. Another key factor to the win was Tristan’s and Dylan chemistry near the basket. Their cohesive play forced the defence to work overtime, wearing them down and opening up a good lead.”
York Eagles @ Bradford Dragons
U14 JrNBL North Conference 1
Result: 46-87 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
James Clayton – 15pts/4rebs/2stls
Notable Performances:
Conor C – 13pts/8rebs/6stls
Tobias Davies – 12pts/3rebs/3stls
Leo Frusher – 9pts/4rebs/2asts
Isaac Morris – 8pts/9rebs/4asts
Griffin Evans – 4pts/14rebs/3stls
Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on the U14 Boys 1 Performance:
“A fantastic team performance from the group, as knowing a win would cemented our place as runners up in the league. Arguably some of the best basketball we have played all year. The ball movement was crisp, we maintained disciplined on spacing allowing increased paint touches and taking advantage of any poor defensive transition and turning them into quick points. Dragons did come out firing with x3 3s which meant we had to apply better half court pressure, after a timeout to re-evaluate our game, we then played our best half court coverage I’ve seen. Forcing errors and poor shots from our opponents. Still, some work on shooting and continue our development of ball circulation and penetration of the key.”
York Eagles v Sheffield Hatters
U13 Yorkshire Girls Regional
Result: 21-71 (LOSS)
Player of the Game:
Florence Walker – 11pts
Yue Fay Ng
Coach Ghada Khattab commented on the U13 Girls performance:
“The girls had a tough game against a seasoned opponent on Saturday. On offence, our intercepted passes cost us dearly due to the Hatters’ well drilled fast breaks. On defence we either got too close to our opponents or did not move quickly enough to help when our teammates got beat. That said, our second half was much stronger, and we showed some promise in how we circulated the ball, moved better on court and freed players to enable them to shoot or cut to the basket. There were some impressive drives by Florence, sneaky steals from Fay Fay, and great rebounds form Sylvie. A lot for us to work on and I'm sure we’ll get there with this every growing wonderful team of young girls.”
York Eagles @ Teesside Lions
U18 JrNBL North Conference 1
Result: 76-97 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
Ben Wells – 30pts/20rebs/4stls
Notable performance:
Travis Greening – 25pts (x5 3PM)
York Eagles v Howden Warhorses
U12 Boys Yorkshire Regional
Result: 51-23 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
Sam Coventry – 11pts
Notable Performances:
Thomas Atkinson – 8pts/6rebs
Coach Adam Wilson commented on the U12 Boys Performance:
"On Saturday so many players stepped up and showed that happy basketball is definitely the way to play. We played really well as a team. Everyone had their hands on the ball because for the first three quarters we moved the ball brilliantly. We did get tired towards the end of the game which caused us to have our heads down and to put the ball on the floor a bit too much, but that is a minor criticism in overall performance. Our defence was also very strong. We help them to under ten points for most of the game which was really impressive. Happy offence and pressure defence all the way!"
York Eagles 2 @ Sheffield Sharks 1
U16 JrNBL North Conference 2
Result: 110-31 (LOSS)
Player of the Game:
James Wormald – 14pts
Coach Dave Smith commented on the U16 Boys 2 performance:
“A little disappointing as although we were facing a tough Sharks side, we lacked a bit of ‘fight’ and desire in their performance as we allowed them to constantly go at us. It isn’t losing, it's how you lose is the important thing. Let’s get back together at training and get ourselves ready for a big rematch with Eagles 3 this weekend.”
Sunday 23rd February
York Eagles v Liverpool
U16 JrNBL Girls North Conference
Result: 61-46 (WIN)
Player (s) of the Game:
Maya Foulkes – 22pts/12rebs/3blks/3stls (x3 3PM)
Zofia Parsons – 14pts/7rebs/7stls
Notable Performances:
Amelie Hetherton – 9pts/3asts/2rebs/2stls
Danika Croft – 14pts/4rebs
Coach Ghada Khattab commented on the U16 Girls performance:
“After last week’s hiatus, the girls came back from half term ready for some action and delivered a very strong performance on Sunday. After a slightly slow start, each of Danika and Zofia opened up the scoring with some great give-and-goes; this, together with solid defence by everyone, gave us an early lead and set us on the right track. Our 2nd quarter had a much faster pace, and we delivered our best performance, with fearless drives and 3 pointers by Maya, great use of space by Amelie, and impressive, execution of plays by everyone. Every team member worked hard to reduce scoring opportunities from Liverpool and despite foul trouble in the 4th Q, we maintained a comfortable lead till the end.”
York Eagles v Trafford Magic
U16 JrNBL Northern Premier
Result: 62-58 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
Ben Wells – 28pts/9rebs
Notable Performances:
Aleks Meszek – 12pts/12rebs/3blks
Coach Reece Horton commented on the U16 Boys 1 performance:
“Another win. Still looking to put a full game together. At times we were in control, but we switched off for periods and let them back in. We held it together to finish with a deserved win.”
York Eagles v Newcastle Eagles
U18 JrNBL North Conference 1
Result: 96-51 (WIN)
Player (s) of the Game:
Eddy Wragg – 24pts/8rebs/3blks/3stls
Samson Frusher – 11pts/6asts/9rebs/3stls
Notable Performances:
Travis Greening – 20pts/3stls
Ben Wells – 19PTS/12rebs
Coach Paul Pickering commented on the U18 Men’s performances from both games:
“Last weekend saw us get 2 wins from 2 and continue our unbeaten attempt at the league title. We secured a guaranteed top 2 finish by the end of the weekend. Firstly, we travelled to a resilient Teesside team that resisted our strong driving game for as long as they could and caused us to up our defensive level at times. 2nd up was a short-handed Hartlepool who were better than their record suggests. We struggled finishing and shooting at times, but we got the job done with some standout performances and good rebounding and second chance points. Standout performers in terms of points this week were Ben, Travis, Eddy and Samson with some strong defensive efforts from Sam, Jack M and Ralph. Work to do now in the gym before our friendly against Doncaster in preparation for Leeds at Home!"
