Report by Tyler Paton-Pottage

Below is our Wrap of the games that took place in week 9 of the 2023/24 season.
Friday 24th November 2023
York Eagles @ QE Knights
U18 Jr NBL Northern Premier
Result: 63-64 (L)
Player of the game: Freddie Marshall (20pts/5rebs/4stls/x5 3PM)
Coach Rod Gimarangan commented on the U18s Performance:
“The team started the game off slow, being down by 20 at halftime. After an intense huddle, the team switched on their game, worked hard, and fought very hard in the 2nd half. We just ended up losing by 1 point. As a coach, I am very happy with the performance of the team.”
Saturday 25th November 2023
York Eagles II v Doncaster Eagles
U14 Jr NBL North Conference 1
Result: 47-69 (L)
Player(s) of the game:
Griffin Evans (Defensive Warrior – 9rebs)
Leo Frusher (8pts/3rebs)
Coach Steve Hardisty commented on the U14s II performance:
“Despite the excellent guidance and direction provided by Coach Dave, the boys couldn’t quite click to extract a victory from yesterday’s game against a determined and competent Rotherham side, whose number 31 (with 27 points) gave them the edge in what was otherwise a close game. As with several recent games the boys had spells where they demonstrated that they know exactly what is required on court and how to deliver it. The boys need to work on maintaining that intensity and concentration for the full four quarters. There are lots for the boys to work on in practice, to build on the bits they are already doing well.
Player of the Match goes jointly to Griffin and Leo both of whom put in really solid performances and showed energy and good decision-making, with Griffin delivering a robust defensive performance and Leo showing good form in front of the basket with 8 points. Bertie also gets a special mention with 10 rebounds and 9 points.”
Notable Performances:
Jake Richardson – 11pts
Bertie Hardisty – 9pts/10rebs
York Eagles V Teesside Lions
U14 Jr NBL North Conference 1
Result: 97-16 (W)
Player of the game: Iker Chavana Martinez (8pts/12Robert/4asts/4stls)
Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage Commented on the U14s Performance:
“Another efficient performance against a very nervous Mohawks side, who really struggled against our intensity and ability, especially in the first half, some great finishes throughout and good passing, still small details like footwork and movement on offence, but those things can be ironed in training. Was also great to see everyone on the team score!”
Notable Performances:
Caleb Flitcroft – 16pts/5rebs
Will Poole – 12pts/8rebs
Sam Ho – 10pts/6stls/4rebs
Hayden Fogg – 10pts/4stls/3rebs
James Wormald – 10pts/2rebs
Jack Bishop – 8pts/9rebs/4blks
York Eagles @ MK Breakers
U16 Jr NBL Northern Premier
Result: 50-53 (L)
Player of the game: Emilis Vildziunas (14pts/9rebs/5stls/4blks)
Coach Paul Pickering commented on the U16s Performance:
“A long trip to Milton Keynes resulted in our toughest defeat yet as it was a much-improved performance to last week's defeat away at Giants. In summary, we should have won this one, and the lads are all bitterly disappointed that we didn’t. It was ours to win. Breakers started strong and we struggled to get going but once we did our motion offence and lockdown zone meant that we eased back into the game. A strong run in the 3rd saw us take the lead and then it was a tight game through the 4th with neither team able to make baskets. Missed FTs and failing to close out a half-court buzzer-beater was the difference.”
Sunday 26th November 2023
York Eagles V Trafford Magic
U18 Jr NBL Northern Premier
Result: 56-79 (L)
Player of the Game: Korbin Evans (16pts/7rebs/2stls)
Notable Performances:
Freddie Marshall – 17pts/3stls/x4 3PM
York Eagles V Teesside Lions
U12s Northern Regional League
Result:
Player of the Game: Louis Copeland (3pts/5rebs/1stl)
Coach Kaiden Farrington commented on the U12s performance:
“Another tough one this weekend vs Teesside, coming to our home after playing a game already today and bringing a really good fight. On our end we struggled straight away due to them pressing from the start, showing that as a team we need to practise beating a press. Also struggled on the defensive end massively with things like help defence, rebounding, and stopping the ball all being things that we need to work on together. Offensively there was a variety of skill shown, decent shooting, finishing at the rim a little but mainly taking advantage of the free throw line which was good. Happy with the team and well done to them all especially Louis being the player of the game, impressive on both ends of the floor showing his wide range of skill.
On to the next one…”
Notable Performances:
George FitzThomas – 19pts/8rebs/3stls/x1 3PM
Raylan Durkin – 6pts/6rebs/2stls
Associate Head Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage comments on this week:
“A string of tough losses was a pattern this week, with close games for both our U18s (v QE) and U16s (v MK) losing by only one score, I was a spectator at U18s and the fight back and resilience from the u18s showed progress and now the team understands what is expected going forward to get more wins this season, similar story with our u16s, who have had a mixed bag of results at 4-4, hoping to create some consistency within the team and get on a little run of confidence.
My u14s continued to prove they are a team to be feared, as we won big again, versus a smaller Tees Valley side. Expected to be challenging the title come March.
Our u14s young team continues to learn what is expected of them at NL level as they lost to a team, I’m sure we could beat them in the reverse fixture if we work extra hard behind the scenes.
Finally, it was great to get a game for our U12s who are hungry for more exposure to competition as we welcomed Teesside who boasted 3 or 4 very talented u12s. A couple of comeback runs wasn’t enough, but Coach Kaiden knows full well what he needs to be fixing in training in time for their next game to get the win.”
