Eagles Weekly Wrap 2024-10-23

Wednesday 23rd October 2024

Report by Tyler Paton-Pottage

WEEK 4!

Saturday 19th October

York Eagles @ City of Leeds 2

U14 JrNBL North Conference 1

Result: 23-104 (WIN)

Player of the Game:

Oscar Longbottom – 20pts/8rebs/2stls

Notable Performances:

Leo Frusher – 19pts/9rebs/2stls

James Clayton – 13pts/6ats/5rebs/3stls

Isaac Morris – 9pts/14rebs/5asts

Conor Camplin – 8pts/11rebs/9stls/4asts/3blks

Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on the U14 Boys 1 performance:

“After a week’s break from games, it gave us time to work in training, which paid dividends evidently as we sailed past Leeds 2 with a ruthless display of team basketball and superior speed and finishing. We set the tone straight away with a fine 17-0 run in the first 5 minutes with our full-court pressure defence causing Leeds a few headaches. What has improved is our reading of passing lanes on defence and rebounding on the offensive board, with the latter creating good 2nd chances to score, which Oscar and Leo did very well. Some really tidy finishing on display too which shows levels of confidence and creativity from the group. A good run of home games now in aim to start some real momentum.”

York Eagles @ Derby Trailblazers

U16 JrNBL Girls North Conference

Result: 20-92 (WIN)

Player of the Game:

Amelie Hetherton – 15pts/3asts/3rebs/2stls/2blks

Notable Performances:

Maya Foulkes – 15pts/8asts/3stls

Zofia Parsons – 17pts/5stls/2asts

Danika Croft – 15pts/3asts/2stls

Katherine Hirst – 11pts/7stls/4asts

Coach Ghada Khattab commented on the U16 Girls performance:

“It was business as usual for the girls this week as they encountered a less experienced side and dominated the game throughout despite a slow start. We are definitely showing the signs of a team that has been playing together for a while, as we displayed great understanding of each other’s movements and intentions, we talked to each other more, and we showed no mercy on defence. Team play was top-notch and defence ruthless throughout. Everyone contributed to the scoresheet and hustled for the ball, and our less experienced players seriously stepped up their play. Special mention to Elizabeth, who was on good form, particularly in the 2nd half, denying countless passes by the other team, stealing the ball and heading for fast breaks.”

York Eagles 2 @ City of Leeds 3

U14 JrNBL North Conference 1

Result: 37-75 (WIN)

Player of the Game:

George Fitz-Thomas – 32pts/4rebs/3stls

Notable Performances:

Raylan Durkin – 10pts/5rebs/2stls

Alessio Vento Joyce – 6pts/5rebs/3stls

Billy Kemp – 6pts/7rebs/6stls

Alex Lawson – 5pts/7rebs/5stls

Coach James Searson commented on the U14 Boys 2 performance:

“Maximum effort from the lads today. It was the first time we have tried to full-court press a team for some parts of the game, but with efforts and hustle, it paid off. We achieved our first NL win with everyone getting on the score sheet. Plenty still to work on but moving in the right direction. MVP was George Fitz-Thomas, who was outstanding today, with 32 points, hitting shots from deep and finishing strong at the hoop. On to the next one…”

York Eagles @ MK Breakers

U16 JrNBL Northern Premier

Result: 83-60 (LOSS)

Player of the Game:

Aleks Meszek – 17pts/14rebs/3blks

Coach Reece Horton commented on the U16 Boys 1 performance:

“Great effort from the boys, despite being noticeably short-handed with the number of players this week. We competed well against a much taller team and the boys never quit. Aleks was MVP, he put in an impressive performance.”

York Eagles 2 @ Doncaster Eagles

U16 JrNBL North Conference 2

Result: 109-38 (LOSS)

Player of the Game:

James Wormald

Coach Dave Smith commented on the U16 Boys 2 performance:

“It was a demolition by a superior team in every way. York was out thought, out played, out hustled and out muscled and out anything else you can mention. The biggest disappointment was we continued to make the same mistakes time and time again. MVP was James Wormald again, for some good finishes and decent defence. Time to start learning from our mistakes.”

Sunday 20th October

York Eagles 3 v Sheffield Sharks II

U16 JrNBL North Conference 2

Result: 54-53 (WIN)

Player of the Game:

Sam Smales – 20pts/10rebs

Coach Gary Poole commented on the U16 Boys 3 performance:

“The teams both seemed pretty even across the game, but the Eagles came out stronger. I love the team spirit + togetherness, every player worked hard and contributed when needed. The boys kept their heads, played hard and ultimately came back from being 10pts down to win by 1pt! Great team and a great feeling to get our first win on the board but not our last win I am sure! Still, a few things to iron out, some poor passing, way too many turnovers that once again let the opposition score + move ahead on points and watching the ball too often without boxing out on rebounds.”

York Eagles v City of Leeds Gold

U18 JrNBL North Conference 1

Result: 116-24 (WIN)

Player of the Game:

Sam Walker-Taylor. – 10pts/10stls/5asts

Notable Performances:

Emilis Vildziunas – 22pts/9rebs

Eddy Wragg – 17pts/3rebs

Travis Greening – 18pts/5asts/5stls

Aleks Meszek – 15pts/9rebs

Lukai Ostrowski – 11pts/5asts/4stls

Coach Rod Gimarangan commented on the U18’s performance:

“It is a good win for the boys, especially coming from a tough loss last week in the cup. Leeds had no answer to our ‘Punch’ press in the 1st Quarter which resulted in a 46-2 run. Everyone made valuable offensive and defensive contributions, but it does not stop here. We continue to learn and improve both individually and as a team. On to the next game…”
