Report by Tyler Paton-Pottage

WEEK 8!
Saturday 16th November
York Eagles U12 v York Eagles U13
Inter-Club Boys Friendly
Result: 47-39
Player of the Game:
U12 – Tom Baxter – 15pts/10stls/5asts
U13 – Henry Sinclair – 9pts/8rebs/8blks
Notable Performances:
U12 – Judah Wilson – 14pts/7rebs/4stls
U13 – Nate Wilkinson – 10pts/8rebs/5stls
Coach Adam Wilson commented on the U12 Boys' performance:
“We had an exceptional performance against a team that was much bigger and stronger than us. The motion in our 5 out offence was good to see. We got 15 assists from 22 pts, which shows a fantastic passing mentality and that passing and cutting to the basket works! Our intensity was great. We hustled back on defence, played with pressure, and constantly ran the floor. However, the highlight was our team spirit. The team is a joy to coach because they love the game and love to play for each other. Bring on Leeds LDM in December!”
Coach James Searson commented on the U13 Boys' performance:
“It took us too long to get going today and, in the end, it cost us. Played some good basketball in parts of the game but our finishing was not good enough. Well done to the U12s, they play some nice basketball and some of their shooting was awesome! MVP for us was Henry, he played some great help defence and gave us all the whole game.”
York Eagles v Bradford Dragons
U14 JrNBL North Conference 1
Result: 59-42 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
James Clayton – 21pts/5rebs/2stls
Notable Performances:
Conor – 9pts/8rebs/6asts/2blks
Maks Molka – 9pts
Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on the U14 Boys 1 performance:
“A HUGE win for my lads today, as we knew what the stakes were with both teams 5-1 before the game and looking to keep in touch with the league title. We did our homework and knew exactly what we needed to do. A slow start (AGAIN) as neither team got a real grip on the game, with Dragons taking a slender lead into halftime, with us clawing to stay in it as we struggled to deal with their big and shifty point guard, we lacked rebounding and intensity to our offence. A stern chat was needed to get this group awake. We knew we needed to be aggressive but disciplined on defence and look for good opportunities on offence to win. Then damn, we did so incredibly, we made a good team look ordinary as we kept Dragons at bay with 2pts in Q3. This was down to many defensive stops from our press as well as our help defense being active! Matched this with good offence, and hitting big threes to finish the game strong, shout out to Griffin Evans who did a great job in frustrating his man.”
York Eagles @ Liverpool
U16 JrNBL Girls North Conference
Result: 61-51 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
Maya Foulkes – 22pts/3asts/3rebs (x4 3PM)
Notable Performances:
Zofia Parsons – 17pts/4rebs/2blks
Amelie Hetherton – 11pts/3rebs/4blks
Danika Croft – 10pts/3rebs
Coach Ghada Khattab commented on the U16 Girls performance:
“One of the things for us to get used to this season is playing close matches and knowing how to react when we fall behind. We have been chatting about this recently, because last year we got too used to winning by a large margin and, whilst good, we didn’t get to practice enough about what it is like to play under pressure very often and we allowed ourselves too many mistakes as we knew we could make up for them. The last two games have shown us that we can no longer do that, so we absolutely need to change our mindset, to trust each other and our offence sets, and not to just rush things and then panic when the score is tight. We had to deal with this at Liverpool, and we did enough to get the win and we pulled together and I am proud of the girls for doing so!”
York Eagles v Sheffield Sharks 1
U16 JrNBL North Conference 2
Result: 34-74 (LOSS)
Players of the Game:
Laurence Parkinson
Alvin Chan
Isaac Devine
Notable Performances:
Ollie Llewellyn – 12pts/7rebs/3stls
Alex Duke – 2pts/9rebs/5blks
Coach Dave Smith commented on the U16 Boys 3 performance:
“Very proud of the players today against the best team in the league. We won the 3rd quarter and we had players who never score in Laurence and Isaac SCORE! We had Alvin take a charge on defence – wow! This needs to be a watershed moment, the team has turned a corner… onwards and upwards. MVP was Laurence, Isaac and Alvin. This game defined why this old bugger coaches.”
Sunday 17th November
York Eagles 2 @ East Durham Lions
U14 JrNBL North Conference 1
Result: 110-27 (LOSS)
Player of the Game:
Alex Lawson
Coach James Searson commented on the U14 Boys 2 performance:
“An improved performance on last week. We had some nice spells on offence and defence. The score line would have been a lot closer but our baskets would not drop today. We need to work on getting to the ball quicker, being more physical when rebooking and finishing at game speed. Standout player was Alex Lawson, who hustled the whole match.”
York Eagles @ Trafford Magic
U16 JrNBL Northern Premier
Result: 70-85 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
Aleks Meszek – 23pts/18rebs/3stls
Coach Reece Horton commented on the U16 Boys 1 performance:
“Really good team effort for a deserved win. After the first quarter, we controlled the game. Our defence is improving, which needs to continue as we progress through the Eason. Key contributions on offence from Sam Ho and Declan Corbally today also.”
York Eagles 3 v Rotherham Hawks
U16 JrNBL North Conference 2
Result: 55-44 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
Luke Lattimore-Bahrij – 13pts/7rebs/4blks
Notable Performances:
Sam Smales – 22pts/6rebs/5blks
Will Poole – 6pts/11rebs
Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on the U16 Boys 3 performance:
“Although it was not a pretty game with a lot of physical elements of the game, but we dealt with well, especially in the final quarter as we started to pull away from Hawks. This was down to numerous things we asked the group to focus, defensive help and secondary help to not allow easy layups and force outside shots, secondly to maintain good discipline on offensive and not rush our offence and let our passing and initiative drive us to the basket. Some big shots from Luke & Trevor mixed with some fantastic defence on ball defence from Riley, Tristan, Sam S + Freddie. Offence needs more work and learning how to play against a zone and then take pride in our ability to shoot and not pass up good opportunities.”
York Eagles @ Newcastle Eagles
U18 JrNBL North Conference 1
Result: 89-67 (WIN)
Player of the Game:
Travis Greening – 30pts/6rebs/5stls
Notable Performances:
Emilis Vildziunas – 21pts/10rebs/5blks
Korbin Evans – 11pts/11rebs
Eric Boyes – 11pts (x3 3PM)
Coach Paul Pickering commented on the U18s performance:
“The unbeaten streak stays alive after a nervy start…
6-0 on the season and the lads had to dig deep to get the job done today in this heated contest. Teesside were no slouches with 3 great players and a good coach that had them playing as a unit. It took us all the way until the 4th Quarter to pull away and eventually win convincingly. An MVP performance from Travis Greening, on the offensive end along with a notable performance with some sharp shooting from Eric Boyes saw us emerge victorious. Still a few things to work on; more pressure in the early phases of the game and stepping up on secondary help defence. Better discipline as we finished the game with 27 fouls, with many avoidable. Lastly, free throws (4/20) leaving 16 possible points out on the court. We go again this week and focus is on Tees Valley as we look to take the lead in the league as Mohawks are top currently.”
A BIG weekend of games with a lot of success!
